Ethics

Polarization may prompt the clinician to avoid working with those with contrasting political beliefs. If there is a sense of rushing towards termination or referral, or just feeling stuck, mental health providers can consult ethical practice guidelines and professional values as guides. For example, social workers are ethically bound not to discriminate on the basis of "political belief." The social work value of the client's right to self-determination can help set boundaries in the cross-partisan therapeutic alliance.
